When overburden (the stuff on top of ore) gets removed it significantly increases in volume (from compacted material to loose) and this can be used to fill the hole. In addition in some distant future when we get to the wet refining plant part of the waste/reject stream of sand from ore can be stockpiled and used for backfill.
