That’s amazing that the massive advances in human diabetes research have translated into veterinary medicine.

I totally agree, you are not going to get accurate BGLs from a stressed cat, & that is also going to depend on their normal eating & routines in their own environment & really important when titrations insulin doses.

I was a qualified veterinary nurse for 7 years prior to human nursing, so I understand poor Pablo’s predicament, we never had this kind of technology back then.

Veterinary staff generally love animals & attempt to foster a trust & compassionate relationship with animals in their care, this generally works really well, some love & affection shown & some food if they aren’t in for surgery.

I also have a lovely Ginger boy, he’s the most chilled out, affectionate & well socialised cat, but like your Pablo, I think he would not take too kindly to having blood taken every hour either & would also put up a massive fight out of fear & not eat.

A scared cat can be extremely dangerous to handle & restrain (more so than dogs, as they have more weapons to inflict injury), it’s not pleasant for the animal or staff & it’s not a reflection on the animal’s personality or nature, they go into ‘fight or flight’ response, which is innate & a natural thing in humans as well when threatened with danger.

Cats are such creatures of habit & routine (funny with daylight savings just kicking in, our pets our still adjusting to this), even a change in their own familiar environment can stress them out. I hope Pablo recovered quickly being back home & it’s really great that you have alternative options. Our pets are lifelong, part of the family & their health & wellbeing is important too.
