Licensing deal = monetization. This is and always was one of the main ways this business was going to make money. Other ways are advertising, in-app purchases (already happening), sponsorship and data analytics.
The app is currently ranked 75th on the Google Play Entertainment top grossing US chart. That means it is generating revenue before advertising revenue streams have started, which probably isn't far away IMO.
