Antiviral/virucidal studies typically use log reductions to determine the percentage reductions of infectious viral particles, where a 1 log reduction (e.g., 103 to 102) is a 90% reduction, 2 log is a 99% reduction, 3 log is 99.9% reduction and so on. In this particular experiment, the Omicron strain's growth pattern was different to other strains of SARS-CoV-2 tested previously in that the viral titre (viral load) at baseline was lower than other strains at approximately 102.5. This lower starting point means that it isn’t possible to achieve greater than a 2.5 log reduction (or 99.6% reduction).

As noted in the announcement’s experimental details, SPL7013 achieved a maximum possible 2.5 log reduction (i.e., 102.5 to 100 = 1) , which is equivalent to a >99.6% reduction.

Given the baseline did not exceed 2.5, this was the maximum possible reduction that could be achieved in this experiment. If the viral load at baseline was higher e.g., 104 as we saw for Delta and other strains, and it reduced to 100, the percent reduction could have been as high as >99.99%. However, for Omicron this wasn’t possible as it didn’t achieve the baseline levels of other strains, so it wasn’t possible to achieve any more than a 2.5 log reduction (or 99.6% reduction).

It's not that SPL7013 is less effective against the Omicron strain but rather the Omicron strain's inability to replicate to the high levels seen with the other strains in previous antiviral experiments, which limited the maximum possible reduction to >99.6% in this experiment.

Thank you for sharing sarge so HC not pulling down the thread even after your request they should, anyway the answer from Starpharma is excellent so you are not in the bad books after all and Viraleze is proven against Omicron and I would expect new strain also. Good result imo lets hope the TGA do the right thing. Thursday tomorrow lets all hope for some good news.
