    Hi gaucu, it's just not accurate to compare the SARS CoV-2 virus with influenza viruses.

    SARS CoV-2 and other coronaviruses have lower mutation rates than influenza viruses, because they have a proofreading enzyme that reduces the chance of mutations occurring in the coronavirus. Like all viruses, there have still been a number of mutations occurring, but the vast majority don't change the protein sequences of the virus, and none have been shown to affect the receptor binding domain of the spike protein, or the structure of the spike protein, which is the part of the virus that neutralizing antibodies and vaccines are raised against.

    And while it's possible that these mutations could occur in the future, scientists are currently estimating it could take years for that to occur, and the more we have a vaccine that reduces transmission early, the fewer chances the coronavirus will have to spread and mutate in the future anyway.
