DJ Newcrest Mining To Raise A$500 Million In Placement - Source

SYDNEY (Dow Jones)--Newcrest Mining Ltd. (NCM.AU) is looking to raise A$500 million in
a fully underwritten equity placement at a price of A$27.00 a share, a market participant
said Monday.
Newcrest shares last traded at A$31.00, meaning the deal would come at a roughly 13%
discount.
The deal is being marketed Monday and books on the deal should be closed by the
evening, the person said.
Goldman Sachs JBWere, Merrill Lynch and UBS are handling the placement.
Newcrest, Australia's biggest gold miner, said Monday it plans to carry out an
institutional share placement to strengthen its balance sheet.
The Melbourne-based company requested that its shares be placed on a trading halt ahead
of the placement, which it said would begin Monday.
"The purpose of the capital raising is to strengthen Newcrest's balance
sheet, enhance its financial flexibility and take advantage of growth
opportunities," Newcrest said in a statement.
