Scientists are beginning to commercialise an anti-COVID-19 nasal sprayPosted TodayCOVID-19 has been bothering people since late 2019. It became pandemic in spring 2020 and it’s been a huge global problem ever since. Now we have vaccines and new drugs are also emerging. Recently scientists from the University of Birmingham together with Birmingham Biotech Ltd began the commercialization process of an antiviral nasal spray against COVID-19.A commercial version of the anti-COVID-19 nasal spray is on its way. However, they are not 100 % effective and not everyone wants to take them. We need more tools in our arsenal to combat this dangerous viral infection and tha nasal spray could be one of the more important ones. Its formulation was engineered by scientists at the University of Birmingham and it basically provides an additional protective measure with the potential to reduce transmission. This nasal spray basically encapsulates and deactivates the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19 disease. It is pretty much the first line of defense, because it engages the virus right in the nose, where it starts its journey in the body. This spray contains two compounds that are already approved by regulatory bodies in the UK, Europe and the US, which made its testing and approval process way simpler and faster. The first of these compounds, called polysaccharide gel, sticks to the mucous-coated epithelia in the nose and catches the virus when it is inhaled. It basically prevents SARS-CoV-2 from travelling further down your throat deeper into the respiratory system. The second compound, called carrageenan, is an antiviral agent, which kills the virus. Basically, polysaccharide gel improves the spread of the spray and its longevity and carrageenan delivers the killer blow to the virus. While this seemed like casual information about a new invention, the news is that scientists and their biotechnology industry partners have begun the commercialization process of this nasal spray. Liam Grover, one of the creators of the spray, said: “As COVID-19 restrictions around the world are gradually lifting, there is a real need for effective methods of viral protection. While existing measures like wearing masks and handwashing remain essential, this nasal spray provides an additional protective measure with the potential to reduce transmission. We are thrilled to be working with Birmingham Biotech to bring the antiviral nasal spray to individuals around the world.”Of course, this spray does not aim to replace vaccines. It is just an additional protective measure. But if it prevents at least some of the dangerous infections, that’s already a pretty decent achievement to be happy about.
