You know Desert(and everyone) mining companies can co-exist with sacred sites.
I actually work on several mines, being a contractor, and have seen many instances where certain areas are fenced off and maintained. These are sacred sites. Also, for instance FQM (originally BHP) Ravensthorpe is a classic example.
There are 2-3 sacred sites in the vicinity. One is a watering hole which is covered by stone slabs (to stop the animals drinking). This is easily accessible for all to see. This can raise awareness on the locals tribes connections with the land. It can lead to a more positive understanding in the broader community. Once the people are understood better then they can feel more confident and a part of the comminity as a whole.
There are also countless emu's, kangaroos and native wildlife surrounding the area. (more emu's than I've ever seen!).
In the Murrin-Murrin area local(and Perth) aborigines work side by side alongside us. They have their own employment company...Its called BYAC... They are some of the most loved characters onsite. Never ending laughs and jokes..even about themselves.
These are some of the positive effects I can vouch first hand.
