Sorry, within all that what I forgot to mention was the fact that a "hub" acts as an interface between your network and devices. So you can have devices linked to the hub only or linked to your network as well.
Now I really hate reading patents but interesting skimming over the 2 granted ones, first one seems to mainly be related to how the software interfaces between the end user and content providers, or advertisers. I like how they've mentioned targeted advertising to the software.

The second seems related to the interaction between your phone and the device, and the ability for your phone to learn and store the data required to control the device.
