SK Innovation is also already building a cell factory in Europe - but in a comparatively small framework: SK is investing around 313 million euros in a plant in Hungary, which will start mass production by 2020 and supply lithium-ion cells to Daimler. When completed, the plant in Hungary will deliver a cell output of 7.5 gigawatt hours, according to the company that would be enough for 250,000 electric and hybrid cars per year. That sounds like a lot - but Tesla's Gigafactory in Nevada should reach at least 35 Gigawatt hours per year from 2020 on a cell output.
Just a few weeks ago, SK Innovation announced that it would raise a battery cell plant in China - together with Daimler Chinese partner BAIC and Beijing Elektronics. And in the US, SK is considering building a battery factory.
Continental failed to cooperate with Koreans
If Volkswagen actually gets involved as a partner in the construction of large-scale cell factories at SK Innovations, there are likely to be some - much larger - plants in Europe. Because the cell starvation of the Wolfsburg should be big in the coming years: In the coming years, Volkswagen plans to introduce dozens of electric models, 2025, the Group wants to sell 3 million electric vehicles worldwide.
