Agreed controlled reduction burns are important, usually done in winter to reduce the risk of getting out of hand as they're more easily controlled.
As Barg states, removing the built up undergrowth prevents wildfire events. I know of one fire reduction burn off helps preserving the habitat of the Burtons legless lizard. The controlled burns are carried out for ecological protection and to preserve the biodiversity of our local flora and fauna.
I'm sure some city dwellers will next suggest that we breed more dingoes and kangaroos to eat the undergrowth. I guess thats why they live in the city as they have absolutely no ideas outside facebook and their mobile phone, they'd be at a complete loss otherwise.
