When your theories don't work in the real world, it's mulish to cling to them. PE ratios were a revolutionary idea when they came into common usage... about 70 years ago. Since then, the tools available to us have expanded at a giddying pace, and our understanding of how to use PEs has evolved from a simple 'low is cheap, high is expensive' mentality. A hammer is still a useful tool, even though it's an ancient invention. But when you have a shed full of tools, it's not wise to try and use a hammer for every job.
