Whilst the intent to reduce carbon was a great idea, as we now all know the process and implementation was a complete cock up and finished quite literally on the scrap heap. However, I take the view that throwing the baby out with the bathwater is also no a good idea. I think that carbon capture and storage (CCS) will remain an important cog in Australia's quest to drastically reduce emissions by 43% by 2030. An article by Colin Packham in the 11/12 Nov Business section of the Weekend Australia draws attention to a JV between Santos and Beach Energy to investigate the prospect of storing more carbon dioxide in South Australia. The partners have been granted a Gas Storage Retention Licence in Sa, which will allow them to determine the nature and extent of natural reservoirs, test the reservoirs for storage of carbon dioxide and establish the commercial feasibility of carbon dioxide storage and storage techniques. The partners are already developing a $249.4m CCS project in Moomba, South Australia. The full article is worth a read, but my interest is that both Santos and Beach have their headquarters in Adelaide close to Andromeda and I believe that in past years there was a good relationship with Minotaur. Moomba is also not too far from the Eyre Peninsula. Maybe a long bow to draw but stranger things can happen.
