I think you underestimate our ability to pervert.
It was a general statement about the various religions in their prime. I love the Buddhist teachings even though not a single original word from the Buddha exists. It was some 400 years after the death of the Buddha that His words were written down, and only then after passing through the divided opinion of several councils. The essence of His teachings though are still wondrous.
