I generally enjoy and admire your optimism, you are a pleasant light amongst all the doom and gloom. (That Ignore button is getting a big workout this month!!).
However, I think you got this wrong. The 1920's was known as the "Roaring Twenties" because people were living it up. Party time, like there was no tomorrow - after all, the War to End All Wars had just finished, life was good, mechanisation was bringing all sorts of benefits, why not? This was the era of the Charleston and good times.
The frugality you refer to came about AFTER the Depression, as a direct result of it.
Nevertheless, I remain very optimistic about the future. The Chinese are naturally very acquisitive, it's part of their culture, always has been. I believe they will out-do the Americans at this spending game.
