OK, think I found the maps you're referring to wipz. You're pretty much right. That symbol usually refers to gas shows in the well. People's definitions of gas shows can vary a bit, but it's usually just elevated background gas readings. Nothing to get too excited about, but at least indicates that there is a working hydrocarbon system in the vicinity.
