The majority of those hand passes happen between the 50 metre arcs. In the WCE case this happens because the ball receiver looks up forward and finds his forwards out numbered and in a some cases no one home at all. As a result they indulge in those silly supporter frustrating handballs and chip kicks to buy time for the forwards and mid fielders to get organised up front. I believe they do this because they don't want to risk running hard forward and then get a turnover against them resulting in an easy opposition goal. In other ways they are not getting numbers into the forward line anywhere near quick enough creating that silly midfield series of handball or chip kicks backwards or sideways. Fremantle did the opposite, with many and numerous occurrences of indiscriminate forward 50 entries resulting in rushed shots at goal and little return for effort.
Fremantle had 20% more inside 50 entries than WCE but lost the game by 30 points.
Just my 2 bobs worth as a frustrated WCE supporter.
