The French national company Imerys purchased the Matauri Bay and Mahimahi mines in 1980, Matauri has been continuous mining from the 1950, they have at third site at Maungaparua which as of 2014 they had not executed their mining rights. As of 2001 they stated a 30 year nine life, so around a decade to go, baring further exploration. Between Matauri and Mahimahi mining 80k tons PA of raw clay. Plant capacity is 25, 000 tpa processed Halloysite.

The Dragon mine in Utah was purchased by Applied Minerals after it was abandoned in the late 1970s, they had taken what was deemed to be all the premium clay out and left the area in poor shape after reneging on their agreement to put the area back as they found it. This resulted in large piles of clay that was regarded as poor quality at the time left scattered across the 230 acre landscape.

Applied Minerals purchased the site as new technology enabled them to refine the left overs into a premium product, I don’t know what “premium” is in their eyes. They have a measured resource of just over 2.3 million tons.

One of the PREVIOUS known largest deposits in the worlds is Dunino near Legnica in Poland, estimated at 10 million tons. Looks to be of average quality.
