We tried that for 2 seedling Avos. It seemed to work, they grew to about 1m high in the pots over winter. After planting out they went OK for about a month then just folded. They were planted into quite sandy soil and may not have been given enough water especially considering it became quite hot (high 30s) after planting out although we did shade them. I hope you have better luck.
