I guess you would call what you are making a loam being a mix of clay , sand and silt , best to try different things like you are doing , I use to farm where there was a ash and pumice layer around 150 mm in thickness and about 600mm under the surface, was great natural drainage . Above it was alluvial or colluvial silt loam (a little clay ) was great for growing just about anything .
