the only way that scenario would play out is if they had been pre warned no news was forthcoming, even so, shorting a stock after a 50% retrace is lunacy by any standards, I think there is lot more to the story than has been told. Deep pockets may be at work here, eg an institutional support trying to build a decent stake at a low entry.
