We don't know with any certainty if the shorter was the buyer (covering) or the seller. That will probably be revealed when the ASIC Short Postions for 21 May are released.
Either way, being an after market transaction, it has a particular stench about it, and the broker would have to know what was going on.
Just a wild guess but I'd say JPM are involved somewhere.
Vanguard must be so proud of themselves.
