I'm no shorting expert but if you're one of those instos I assume that you can just give the newly acquired shares back to the institution who you borrowed the shares from when the shorting position was opened.
The thing is, us retail folk won't know they've done this for a number of days when short position data is published.
They could close out their entire short position today and no one would know for a few more days.
