Is it unfortunate?
IMO everyone can self educate and retrain themselves for a better outcome.

My self education is that your financial position has little to do with how much you earn and more to do with what you do with your earnings. As my current career is in finance it strikes me as sad that, in Australia, we do so little on financial intelligence. I actively talk to my children about financial matters to educate them because they are not going to learn it in any education setting. I am a little frustrated that topics like diversity are more important to educators than practical financial management.

You touched on immediate gratification which IMO can be unlearned. Turn off all those AfterPay, ZipPay and Credit Card accounts and only buy what you can afford. Plenty of Millennials I assist are already doing this. So perhaps the newer generations are learning something.
