Have you read "The Richest Man in Babylon"?
Your sentence starting "My self education..." could be a paraphrased straight from the book.
Most people learn to live to the level at which they earn and as they earn more they spend more.
Having said that, I'm sure its more difficult for people on lower incomes because there's always a certain income level at or below which its difficult to do anything other than live day to day and just cover costs.The book is well worth a read. I gave each of my kids a copy when they turned 17.
Agree too that we spend too much time teaching diversity than practical financial advice.
