It also allows you to freeze capital gain. YOu are sitting on capital gain of $100K but you are at 11 months for example and want the CGT discount. Short the same amount and now your gain is preserved. Wait one month, and for the sake of a little interest you close out both and crystalise your net $100k gain. DYOR
