Today's drop will be one of the top stories on news bulletins tonight.
S&P 500 may be back to where it was in October 21, but this is Australia. The All Ords is down 5% from 1st October 2021 and down 10% for the month to date. At this rate we'll all be broke by August. Will you put on free drinks at the bar????
Wifey and I are fully self funded retirees so I tend to think of things from that perspective. With such a volatile market having a substantial effect on ones retirement funds, it makes planning any major expenditure difficult. Maybe some have deferred those house renovations to cater for the frailties of old age, in the hope next year will be better. Or do we just blow it all and become dependent on the taxpayer for our daily bread.
Some consistency in returns would be a great benefit: plus 15% one year followed by -5% the next is no good to anyone. I am of the belief that removing the benefits gained by some in a declining market (forced or unforced) would go some way to reducing this sort of volatility.
