The shorts could have a long position as well and simply want to immunise themselves against volatility. I have done this with currencies in investments for example. If I had $30,000 USD in a stock and was worried about the USD declining in value, I could short the USD. This would protect me against currency fluctuations and leave me to realise gains only on the security. Common practice in times of uncertainty, but odd with ADN for sure.
