At the risk of being seen as pedantic, Ukraine ought to be referred to as Ukraine, not the Ukraine. The former is its title as a self-governing and independent nation. The latter implies it is a region within Russia, which is what Putin would like.
Out of respect for our courageous Ukrainian brothers and sisters, I think it behoves all of us (who care) to try to remember this distinction when making reference to their nation.
