Quite right, but 10 times $1000 is still basically very little but 10 times $10,000 is $100,000 which is a nice tidy sum.

I was attracted to a company that had positive cobalt drilling results and the share price tripled, then in a short period dropped back to under a cent. This was a sideline to a tin mine they were developing. I was living in a showground in a broken down van and in a period of about 12 - 18 months, in addition to my meager savings purchase, whenever I saved up an extra $500 I would buy more shares at $.008.
I had over 2 million shares when they released new drilling results and I sold my shares for $.035 and bought a new van.

Sometimes the only way to get ahead is to take risks. The more research and attention you pay to what is going on then the more the risk is lessened.
