I'm on the generalist side of things and feel it has served me well and I do agree with the positive views, however I encourage my children to pick a path and specialise. You have to be careful that it's not done at the expense of other things, social interaction, fun, travel but I think it can lead to better outcomes. Bruce Lee sums it up for me....
