Forex in financial difficulties: no danger for Amos

The company under the protection of the Creditors Arrangement Act

The Unifor union, which represents the 160 unionized workers at the Forex factory in Amos, says it is not worried about the company's financial woes regarding the future of the local factory.

According to the director of the Unifor union for Quebec, Daniel Cloutier, the fact that Forex has placed itself under the protection of the Creditors Arrangement Act does not threaten the maintenance of activities at the plant.

“Of course there is uncertainty, but the operator of the bankruptcy (Price-Waterhouse-Cooper Inc.) told us that there was no question of interrupting activities in the factories of the company. What we have learned is that it is mostly a question of debt restructuring and issues related to the current shareholders, which would not influence the operation of the factories. We are going to monitor the situation closely, but, for the moment, we do not believe that this will have a negative long-term effect,” explained Daniel Cloutier.

On February 7, the Forex company placed itself under the Creditors Arrangement Act, which includes its facilities in Amos, Ferme-Neuve and Mont-Laurier, as well as its new factory located in Wawa, Ontario.

The Amos plant manufactures oriented strand board (OSB) for the construction industry from trembling aspen and white birch.
