"The dragon is not satan, it is the dark political and religious forces that destroyed Islam. This is as clear as any prophecy can get. It may also be somewhat generic having mentioned Jesus, in that it likely refers to the Catholic hierarchy as well that persecuted dissenters who wanted to follow Jesus more along the lines of His teachings."
Just for interest. What convinces you to believe that Revelations describes events that were to take place in the far future of the writer and his audience. Whether 600 yrs or 2,000 yrs or even 3,000 yrs ?
Any reason to believe Revelations is not just a mostly symbolic description of intense visions relating to the author's inner experiences and partly framed and blended into the context of local worldly events, issues and beliefs at that time ?
As I think even you have pointed out, why would anyone write to his contemporaries of events that would not happen for centuries or thousands of years ?
Surely Revelations only became distant "prophecy" when Jesus did not return as expected at the time and has continued not to return !
