It wasn't very safe at all as lots of hapless goldbugs found out. They were too busy telling us all how the world was collapsing, the USD was crashing, hyperinflation was imminent, WW3 was just around the corner, Greece and Italy were imploding, Fort Knox had been emptied out, China and Russia were 'stackin' more gold than had ever been mined, Russia was going to rule the world and gold was going into the tens of thousands as predicted by their heroes.

A couple of them are still here. Probably trying to get their money back.
