It's more about offering some balance/an alternate view/perspective instead of the same old 'gold is always a lousy bet' compared to stock markets and anyone who might be interested in it is an idiot etc narrative we continually hear from someone.
And after all, the last 20 years is probably likely to be more relevant to many of the readership than the prior 20 from an investment perspective with current and immediate future performances even more so.
