This looks about right, i am not 100% sure but i have a feeling it be used for scanning the slab and laid bricks... could also be used as a closed feedback loop for brick positioning...
I have read in one of the patents that the HX will scan the slab prior to starting the first course. Then with the information it recieves, it will cut the first course of bricks to allow for any imperfections in the slab. Once the first course is complete, the HX will have a nice flat foundation to build up from.
What you've described sounds similar to the way the Patent describes it.
