The GFC was in the main very good financially for me. I was pretty much out of shares until about Dec 2009 when I got stuck into them thinking that we were at all time lows, I was wrong. I continued to purchase and jumped out in early - mid 2010 and paid out margin loan and sent profits to property.

After that, got stuck into a little gas share that was taken out by a major last Xmas, profits to property.

The profits were not life changing in size but very significant for me.

Since early this year I am into a few small specs that I think will do o'k over the next few years.....if so....profits to property.

Down about 20% on these specs this year.

Learned lots over the last few years;

- be very careful when gearing for shares(I don't do it now)

- don't invest more than you can afford to lose

- have balance in your life and see shares in context

- have faith in your initial decisions

- don't average down for the sake of it but buy at prices that you consider value

- diversify, but not too much

- Hot Copper is a great resource but don't follow the herd

Finally, quality and honest management are hard to find but are worth the search.
