Toyota to unveil two new EVs for U.S. market that will go on sale in 2022

Toyota Motor Corp said on Wednesday it will unveil two new electric vehicles that will go on sale next year in the United States amid a growing push by the Biden administration to cut vehicle emissions, sending the Japanese automaker’s shares soaring.

The company also said it expects that 40% of its U.S. sales by 2025 will be hybrid vehicles or electric vehicles, rising to 70% by 2030.

One of the new EVs next year will be a sport-utility vehicle and Toyota will also unveil a new plug-in hybrid electric vehicle.

The new vehicles for the U.S. market are “the first of many,” Bob Carter, executive vice president of sales for Toyota Motor North America.

“Electrification is the future of this industry. There is no doubt about that,” Carter said.

“The only debate we have is that rate of change.”

Toyota forecasts by 2025 that industry sales will be 7% electric vehicles rising to around 15% to 18% in 2030.

There is growing interest in EVs in the industry.

General Motors said last month it was setting an aspirational goal to sell all its new cars, SUVs and light pickup trucks with zero tailpipe emissions by 2035, a dramatic shift.

Barra on an earnings call Wednesday expressed optimism about the 2035 goal.

“There’s not one big factor that’s going to hold us up.

We have all the assets to achieve this.

We’ve got to solve issues and win customers, but I think we’re well positioned to do that,” Barra said.

Toyota To Launch Two New BEVs And One PHEV In U.S This Year

The giant has awoken!

Toyota intends to introduce three new plug-ins in the U.S. in 2021.

Toyota officially announced today that it will debut three new electrified vehicles for the U.S. market in 2021. And the good news is that those will not be conventional hybrids.

The Japanese company intends to launch two Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) and a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model.

It's one of the best bits of news from Toyota that we've heard in a long time.

Toyota hasn't revealed what type of vehicles we should expect or any details, but we know (see image above) that the company was working on various models for various markets (and with various partners).

The cool thing is that a few of satellite Japanese brands (like Subaru, maybe Mazda) might also launch Toyota-related plug-in derivatives.

The Toyota e-TNGA specs hinted at in late 2019 suggested BEVs with 50-100 kWh battery packs for a range of 186-372 miles (300-600 km) depending on the model.

Toyota to unveil two electric cars and autonomous mobility services

Toyota will unveil two all-electric cars that will go on sale in the US by 2022, and says it aims to offer autonomous mobility services within two to three years.

Its EV plans include a pure electric SUV, although whether this is the mid-sized EV that Toyota said in December was nearly in production is unclear.

The Japanese automaker will also introduce a new plug-in hybrid car, the new report from Reuters said on Thursday (Australia time).

As a leader in non-pluggable hybrid vehicle field, Toyota has appeared to be dragging its feet in the transition away from hydrocarbon fuels.

In 2017 it promised to roll out 10 all-electric vehicle models by the early 2020s, according to Fortune magazine, but they are yet to appear.

Toyota North America VP for sales Bob Carter said the new vehicles flagged this week are “the first of many,” according to Reuters.

“Electrification is the future of this industry,” he was quoted as saying.

“There is no doubt about that. The only debate we have is that rate of change.”

The new report via Reuters says that the Japanese auto giant will now target 40% of sales in the US to be either hybrid or electric by 2025, and 70% by 2030.

It comes shortly after the announcement by the new Biden administration that it would target an electric vehicle transition of the entire US government fleet, an announcement that also saw GM quickly issue a bold statement to move away from vehicles with tailpipe emissions by 2035.

In Australia, Toyota’s 2020 sales were dominated by hybrid sales, with as many as seven in 10 RAVs and Camrys, and half of all Corollas, sold with hybrid drivetrains.

Toyota Australia sales and marketing chief Sean Hanley told Motoring in January that while a 2025 timeline has been previously given for a launch of battery electric vehicles locally, the automaker’s local arm is “always evaluating our electrification strategy and products that become available globally.”
