Sounds about right from What I thought would take place, in an educated guess similar to plutonic gold mine I used to frequent
Open pit top resource as sandy properties (easy digging) and easily wide strikes for volume then underground entry from end of open pit, to the narrower and richer veins in super hard material...
Nice long mine life and little waste movement ...
