Saw a doco on veal somewhere... apparently its better for animal welfare if you DO eat it. Supposedly (breeders aside) male calves aren't useful except for veal because they are too difficult to deal with and obviously don't produce milk. After veal went out of fashion there was no more use for the males so they are routinely killed days after birth since its not worth the expense to raise them.If people eat veal then farmers have an incentive to let them live at least a few months until slaughter and they are well fed in that time. So yeah ironically its crueler to calves to not eat veal.
