“Risks from the LAMP for most locals do not have corresponding rewards
and that is the key to why so many are protesting.”
There is some truth in your point, however, in my opinion, the local reward clearly outweighs the risk because residents around LAMP will receive no radiation whatsoever from LAMP unless they ingest WLP waste. I am not aware of any other avenue of exposure; doubtless residents won’t be able to walk freely through LAMP. Their risk is almost as non-existent.
Their reward is substantial… think of 1000’s of construction jobs, millions of dollars in materials from suppliers during construction and more during operation, complimentary businesses, joint ventures with Lynas, permanent jobs at the LAMP, and a very real chance that the residents’ children will have an opportunity to work in clean energy R&D and manufacturing as the government continues on a path of sophisticated industrial development which has lead to an average annual increase in national GDP of 6.5% over the last 50 years. The risk – reward appears quite favorable.
