Nice idea Riddick. Unfortunately I am sure Rudd and his mob will find a way to make it unprofitable for Telstra to build fibre on top of its copper.

Rudd is driven by a socialist agenda. He will want Telstra to share that fibre network with other telcos at a price set by the government. And the government will set a price it feels is reasonable i.e. aligns with its political interests, which is cheap broadband for all.

Telstra and Optus have already built up fibre optic links along some cities on the Eastern sea board i.e. Sydney, Melbourne. Why? Because it was profitable to do so and they can make money out of it.

However at the current time it is not profitable for Telstra to roll out fibre to the home, so it hasn't done it. Rudd and Conroy call it a failure of the free market that a national fibre network has not been built. I think it is pragmatism.

There is no burning need to have lightning fast broadband to everyone's home. If there was, people would be prepared to pay for it and it would be profitable for Telstra or another telco to provide it.
