Prime Minister John Howard and Opposition leader Kim Beazley have urged the Ten Network to cancel the controversial reality television show Big Brother.

Family groups and politicians have again called for the show to be axed after two housemates were thrown off the show for sexual misconduct.

It is alleged the men were involved in a sexual incident with fellow housemate "Camilla'' in the early hours of Saturday morning in footage that was shown to some internet subscribers.

Mr Howard today said it was a matter of taste and called on the network to self-regulate.

"I think it is just a question of good taste," Mr Howard told Macquarie Radio.

    "I don't like heavy-handed regulation.

"The business community is always saying to me 'let us self-regulate'.

"Well here's a great opportunity for Channel 10 to do a bit of self-regulation and get this stupid program off the air."

    Poor role model

Communications Minister Helen Co onan today said she is concerned a negative perception of women is being reinforced on the show.

Senator Coonan says she has not yet seen the offending footage but would be checking with the broadcasting regulator today to see if it breached any rules.

"The fact that there are sexual advances on a show that is on free-to-air (television) I think really begs the whole question as to whether or not this whole show deserves a bit of a rethink," the minister told ABC radio today.

Constantly seeing sexual advances towards women could "ruthlessly reinforce the kind of notion that women are objects", she said.

"That kind of negative perception of women, I think that is very concerning."

    Confused messages

The senator is also concerned about reports the victim blamed herself when she heard the men had been evicted.

"I think it is very regrettable that Camilla was made to cry and made to feel that she had done the wrong thing and somehow or other was responsible for these guys getting evicted.

"They were responsible, and I don't think we can afford to get confused about these messages."

The minister will discuss the incident with the Australian Communications and Media Authority today.

    Overreaction: Beattie

Queensland Premier Peter Beattie said axing the Network Ten program, which is produced at Dreamworld on the Gold Coast, would be an overreaction.

"Look, we have so much American cra p on our television I think a bit of Australian nonsense doesn't do any harm, frankly," Mr Beattie told Channel Nine.

"If there is a criminal offence committed in these circumstances, the matter should go to the police.

"But I support the Australian television industry, the Australian movie industry . . . I want to see jobs for Australians in that area, so let's not get too carried away and throw the baby out with the bathwater.

"I think they should clean up their act and sort out these sorts of issues, but frankly no I don't (want it banned)."

    Politicians acting like 'Big Brother'

Australian Democrats senator Andrew Bartlett said Big Brother should be left alone by meddling politicians.

"It is politicians trying to be Big Brother that we really need to be concerned about," Senator Bartlett said today.

"Attempting to force a television show off the air because of an incident that wasn't even screened on television is an excessive intrusion into the lives of Australians by moralising, preaching politicians who want to control how people live their lives."
