Yes I have met any number of self proclaimed Aussie Battlers, who spent most of their money on grog, cigarettes and gambling, whilst their children's dinner came from the local McDonald's store.
I remember a family with which my daughter, for a brief time, was familiar with. I went to their residence a number of times, where it was clear they were all on some Government benefit, which clearly assisted them in drinking copious amounts of beer and inhaling cigarettes, assisted by regular visits to the local Salvation Army or some other do gooder organisation. Fortunately, I was eventually to persuade my daughter to seek more suitable social company.
And I remember the loud, and ear piercing squeak, from one of the mothers when her Government allowance was removed due to her eldest daughter reaching the age when the allowance was no longer payable.
