2 SO2+ O2 => 2 SO3
H2O+ SO3 => H2SO4
but:
Under standard conditions, sulphur trioxide, SO3, forms colourless, needle-shaped crystals which are extremely hygroscopic and react very violently with water. There are three different modifications for the solid sulfur trioxide. It is the anhydride of sulphuric acid. Sulphur trioxide is classified as very toxic by inhalation and is carcinogenic. Inhalation of the smoke hardly causes any irritation, but the gas slowly converts into sulphuric acid in the lungs and can cause life-threatening pulmonary edema with delay.
