To clarify, Niger and Nigeria are two separate but neighbouring countries. Niger is the landlocked country where Uranium is mined and there has been a coup d'etat, while Nigeria is the coastal country that controls access to the port where virtually all of Niger's exports go.
Nigeria has slapped sanctions on Niger, which means that getting Uranium out of Niger and into enrichment plants has just become much much more difficult.
And to further clarify, their names come from the Niger river and not their inhabitants.
