SMR's may not even get off the ground at all as a practical source of power.

The huge mistakes in Oz power were made a decade to 2 back IMO. No government had the guts to build power stations - of any kind until Snowy 2.

I don't know why for certain, but I think it was probably because coal was on the nose for a long time and we knew that anything long term - like coal power stations had a good possibility of being old technology within a fairly short period of time. They were expensive to build, so too was nuclear and nuclear was unsalable by Labor and also by the Liberals --------- Labor because they really didn't like it and politically it was a risk and the Liberals had the obvious staring them in the face - if they were to turn and support it - they were saying that they had a dumb idea in banning it in the first place

so, the easy way out short term for all pollies was ---------- do nothing, and that's what they did until Snowy 2.

Now, Oz has the problems that had a high probability of coming - that no new magic technology is here and it's even worse to think about big base power like coal - really on the nose more so and nuclear - even harder than ever.

SMR talk is - just talk. Even if it becomes economic and practical - it's still a battle to get it across the line politically - particularly now the greens have just got more powerful.

Power in Australia is a classic case of when you are gutless and just don't bite the bullet - that it comes back to bite you on the r's decades later.

It's not the only chook that's coming home to roost for contemporary Oz - the wheels in many things are just falling off.

A display of a spectacular lack of vision going back almost half a century. The chooks DO come home to roost - it's always when.
