Seems debatable to me. Either way, there was a beat-up about plastics interfering with the human endocrine system a few years ago, which doesn't seem to have amounted to much.
Like you said, the EU needs Lithium. Long as people aren't seasoning their food with the stuff, we should be okay. Plenty of nastier toxins are in widespread use every day.
