Extremadura New Energies (ENE), the company promoting the excavation of an underground mine for lithium extraction in Valdeflores, announced this morning that it has reached an agreement with Alter Enersun and Enagás for the installation of a photovoltaic solar park with a capacity of 350 megawatts and the construction of two plants, one for the production of renewable hydrogen and the other for the production of green methane. These infrastructures "for renewable energy generation will supply the energy needs of the lithium processing plants" that ENE projects, according to the company in a statement.

As announced in the note released by the company, this alliance, whose objectives are "in the feasibility analysis phase", will generate around 600 jobs in the construction phase and "more than 50 in the long term". The photovoltaic park and the hydrogen and methane production plants would be operational in 2026, according to the companies' plans.

The mine project now has two open faces . One is the judicial one, with the sentence that must decide on the research permit and that will determine the administrative procedure that this project will follow. And another is environmental, with the scope document that must be drawn up by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and that must serve as a basis for the company to prepare the environmental impact study.

The information released by the mining company this Tuesday is intended to announce steps with which it insists that its initiative will have the least possible impact. It does so because it is the basis for any decision that will have to be made in the future about whether or not to excavate the mine. Everything will go through the environmental decision and the impact on the ground.

As reported on Tuesday by ENE in its statement, the collaboration agreement with Enalter (a company formed by Alter Enersun and Enagás) contemplates, in a first phase of development, carrying out studies to design, evaluate and determine the technical-economic viability of the photovoltaic and hydrogen and methane production plant, while the most viable sites in the municipality of Cáceres and its adjoining municipalities will be identified and evaluated. Subsequently, the request for administrative
processing of the project will be made to start construction from 2025. In a second phase, the solar photovoltaic production plants and the production of renewable hydrogen and methane will be put into operation, which will come into operation from 2026 and will have an initial useful life of more than 25 years.
