South Australia's ban on single-use plastics will be expanded from next month, with a broader range of everyday items to be prohibited.

Effective from September 1, fruit bags, thick supermarket bags, single-use food containers, and bread tags will be prohibited in the state.

The expansion builds upon the state previously banning plastic bowls, cotton buds, and pizza savers.

"Ultimately, we'd love to see people not use anything just once," Deputy Premier Susan Close said.

"We should be reusing as much as we can."

Cafes and businesses are already embracing the change, with some transitioning to compostable cups and offering discounts for reusable keep cups.


Cafe owner Luke Halloran said his business was already prepared for the upcoming ban.

"All of our packaging, we use wooden cutlery, we use biodegradable napkins, all of our cups and packaging is made from plants - so everything we use at the moment will be completely fine from September."

Businesses that fail to comply with the new regulations face potential fines.
